British Conservative MP Jacob Rees-Mogg, who has historically expressed skepticism about the need to tackle climate change, has been appointed Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy in Prime Minister Liz Truss’s new government. There are fears that he may delay the target of reducing CO2 emissions to zero by 2050.

In the past, Rees-Mogg has been critical of “climate alarmism” and argued that humanity should adapt to climate change rather than mitigate it. According to him, the pursuit of net-zero emissions is at the root of the high energy prices.

After his appointment, Rees-Mogg said he wants to make it a priority to help people with their significantly higher energy bills. The government will soon come up with a package of measures to help the people, it sounds. According to Bloomberg news agency, Truss plans to allocate 130 billion pounds (151 billion euros) to save households from high energy bills. In addition, a package of 40 billion pounds (more than 46 billion euros) would be ready to support companies.

New ministerial team

Prime Minister Truss announced her new ministerial team late on Tuesday evening. Kwasi Kwarteng becomes Minister of Finance, in Boris Johnson’s cabinet he was Minister of Economic Affairs. James Cleverly is responsible for Foreign Affairs and Thérèse Coffey becomes Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Health.

Ben Wallace is and remains the Secretary of Defense. Suella Braverman will become the new minister at the Ministry of the Interior and will take over from Priti Patel, who announced his resignation on Monday. The new ministers can start on Wednesday, when the first parliamentary question time is on the program.
