Dresden Zoo’s Heartbreaking Farewell to Lioness Layla: A Life Remembered

Dresden – The Dresden Zoo faced a difficult farewell on Tuesday as they made the heart-wrenching decision to euthanize lioness Layla at the age of 20. This decision comes after a thoughtful evaluation of Layla’s declining health, marking a significant loss for both the zoo staff and visitors.

In 2023, Layla was diagnosed with a kidney disease that initially showed no symptoms. However, as the months passed, her condition worsened significantly. According to zoo spokesperson Katrin Kretschmer, the lioness experienced continual weight loss and episodes of decreased appetite and well-being.

There, she shared her new habitat with male lion Jago (who passed away in 2022), rapidly becoming a beloved fixture of the zoo. Over time, the Dresden pride grew to four lions, including siblings Abaja (who passed away in 2025) and Damien.
