Sunak says his government is the only one with clear plans “to stop the boats”. The British government struck a new deal with Rwanda to deport migrants to that country. An earlier attempt to do so was blocked by the judge, because the plan was contrary to international law. Now we just have to wait and see whether parliament agrees.
Even if the ECtHR bans the deportations, his government will “do what is necessary” to allow the planes to take off. As far as he is concerned, the new migration law blocks “every reason that has ever been used to stop flights”. He reiterates that a foreign court will not stop his intentions.
Sunak is under political pressure because of his immigration plans. Part of his own Conservative party believes that the plans do not go far enough. In the press conference, Sunak mainly pointed to Labour, which, according to him, has no plan at all to combat this form of migration. “This is not just the best approach, it is the only approach.”
