The American Cameron Young has taken the lead at the British Golf Open. Superstar Tiger Woods had a terrible day and is only tied 146.

The 25 year old Young played in the rough dune landscape in St Andrews on Thursday (07/14/22) one bogiefree round of 64 and was two shots ahead of Northern Ireland British Open Champion from 2014, Rory McIlroy. Germans are not teeing off in the legendary golf pilgrimage this year.

woods threatens to end prematurely after a very weak opening round. The 46-year-old Californian only played a round of 78 at the start of the anniversary tournament and was initially in 146th place on the par-72 course on the east coast of Scotland. Only the top 70 of the 156 golf pros make it through to the fourth and final majortournament of the year Cut and play for the winning check of $2.5 million over the weekend.

Woods last with health problems

“That’s probably the highest score I could have gotten. I didn’t have a good start”said Woods after an extremely long lap of over six hours. “It looks like I’ll have to play a 66 tomorrow to have a chance.”

For Woods, the British Open is only the third PGA tournament since his serious car accident in February 2021, in which he broke his right leg several times. After making his comeback at the Masters in Augusta in April, Woods had to play at the PGA Championship in May Tulsa give up because of too much pain. He then skipped the US Open in June to sign up for his favorite course, the Old courseto prepare.

But Woods made a mistake on the first hole of the oldest golf course in the world and played a double bogey: first the ball landed in the moat, then a short putt missed the hole. Five bogeys and another double bogey followed. The 15-time major winner managed just three shot wins (birdies). The three-time British Open winner, including two titles in the self-proclaimed “Home of Golf” won in St. Andrews needs a dream lap this Friday from 10.58 a.m. German time to make it into the weekend.
