Conservative Braverman, a party colleague of Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, criticized the actions of the police at pro-Palestinian protests. “Right-wing and nationalist demonstrators who behave aggressively are rightly dealt with severely, but pro-Palestinian mobs who exhibit almost identical behavior are largely left alone. Even when they are clearly breaking the law,” she wrote in an op-ed. It later emerged that Downing Street had not approved Braverman’s article.
Braverman’s behavior previously caused a stir within the government. For example, she allegedly asked for special treatment after a traffic violation and therefore violated the code of conduct.
Braverman was appointed Home Secretary in September 2022 by then Prime Minister Liz Truss. She soon had to resign after sending official documents from a personal email address. Just six days later, Sunak welcomed her back.
The conservative politician is known for her strict migration policy. She took the lead in implementing Sunak’s decision to “stop the boats of migrants entering the UK illegally”.
Braverman will be succeeded in the government by Foreign Secretary James Cleverly, who will in turn be replaced by former Prime Minister David Cameron.
