British boy asks Apple for new emoji – Teddy, 10: “Makes me sad”

10-year-old Teddy hopes that Apple will make a new version of the “nerd emoji”. He feels that the current emoji is disrespectful to people who wear glasses.

A 10-year-old interviewed by the British broadcasting company BBC Teddy Cottle tells how he is upset by the “nerd emoji” found in even Apple’s operating systems, which depicts a character with big teeth and a bespectacled head.

Teddy thinks the emoji mocks people who wear glasses. Teddy thinks the emoji with big teeth is “absolutely awful”, and he believes many other glasses wearers will agree.

– It makes me sad, Teddy said.

Made a new version myself

Teddy did not wait for the possible updated vision of the design team responsible for Apple’s emojis, but made a proposal for a new “genius emoji” himself.

In Teddy’s proposal, the frames of the glasses are thinner and the wide grin with big front teeth has been replaced by a more restrained smile.

He hopes that since there is nothing embarrassing about wearing glasses, they won’t be mocked in emojis either.

– I like wearing glasses because I can see much better. They also look good and stylish, Teddy reasoned.

In use since 2015

Released in 2015, the emoji is a part Unicode 8.0. In addition to Apple, a similar emoji can be found in the emoji selection of many other technology companies, but some have modified its teeth to be smaller or even replaced it with just a smile.

Apple, Samsung and, for example, the messaging service X, however, use a large-toothed version.

The teacher encourages

To take the initiative, Teddy received support from his teacher Lisa.

– He has been quite vocal about it, but in a quite mature way. I think he should be encouraged and supported in this matter, Lisa stated to the BBC.

– He fights for things that are important to him, the teacher praised.
