The bridge over the Strait of Messina is law. It is a colossal work. It will be the longest single span bridge in the world at 3,300 metres. Suffice it to say that the current record holder is the Japanese Akashi Kaikyo Bridge 1,991 meters long. In the meantime, it may be useful to have an idea of how the infrastructure will be created, times and costs according to what has been declared by the government and what is contained in the definitive project.

who manages, times and costs

The decree-law voted in the Senate reactivates the concession to the Strait of Messina Company, founded in 1981 and put into liquidation by the Monti government, and transforms it into an in-house company. The Ministry of Economy holds a 51% majority stake and indicates president and chief executive officer. Rfi, Anas and the Regions of Sicily and Calabria also have participations. While the activity of guidance and supervision belongs to the Ministry of Infrastructures and Transport which can indicate a commissioner. The decree provides for the possibility for the concessionary company and the general contractor (then Salini, now Webuild) to express the will that each contract resume its effects, on condition that legal action is renounced. The final project is also the one approved in 2011, supplemented by a report from the designer with requirements that take into account, among other things, environmental compatibility and the new technical standards for construction. The decree indicates for the approval of the executive project the deadline of July 31, 2024. The bridge could be passable in 2032, in the hopes of the Minister of Infrastructure Matteo Salvini. Chapter money. The latest official project cost estimate, to be updated, is 13.5 billion euros, including onshore works, and is indicated by the government in the annex to Def. In 2011 the cost was 8.5 billion. The economics and finance document also noted that, at the moment, there is a lack of coverage.

The dimensions

But what are the structure and numbers contained in the 2011 project? The Strait Bridge was designed according to the suspension bridge scheme. The technical project to date consists of 8,000 design documents and provides for: a length of the central span of 3,300 metres; a deck width of 60.4 metres; a height of the towers of 399 meters; a central fairway height of 65 meters for the transit of large ships. The suspension system will consist of two pairs of cables each with a diameter of 1.26 m with a total length of 5,320 meters between the two anchor blocks.

cars and trains

There are six road lanes (three for each direction including the emergency lane) and two railway tracks, for an infrastructure capacity equal to 6,000 vehicles/hour and 200 trains/day. The project envisages the crossing of six million vehicles a year and 60,000 trains.

earthquakes and winds

The bridge was designed with an earthquake resistance equal to 7.1 magnitude on the Richter scale, with a “third generation” streamlined deck. The bridge design provides that the work will have the highest structural integrity requirements in the world, compatible with an earthquake of magnitude 7.5 on the Richter scale. The structure will be stable up to a wind speed of 270 km/h. The bridge will allow the transit of vehicular traffic due to winds of up to 158 km/h, while the analyzes carried out foresee railway practicability at 120 km/h in conditions of gusts of wind up to 150 km/h and at 60 km/h in conditions of gusts of wind up to 190 km/h.

Calabria and Sicily

Attention was paid to the connection works: the final project envisages 20.3 km of road connections and 20.2 km of railway connections. As specified by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister Salvini, to enhance the bridge over the Strait, railway and road works for billions of euros have already started both in Calabria and in Sicily. The construction of the bridge, says Salvini, is “a compensation for Calabrians and Sicilians” that will bring “100,000 jobs True”.
