UpdateThe bridge on the Canada-United States border that was closed on Wednesday after a car exploded near Niagara Falls reopened on Thursday. The Canadian authorities have announced this.
The Rainbow Bridge, one of the main border crossings between the two countries, was closed on Wednesday after a spectacular explosion that killed two people. The car that exploded on the bridge was a white Bentley. The victims are a 56-year-old businessman and his wife.
The possibility of an attack was quickly ruled out, and the FBI concluded it was an accident.
According to New York State Governor Kathy Hochul, debris from the explosion was scattered across 14 of the 16 lanes of traffic.
LOOK. Surveillance footage shows the car flying through the air and exploding
The images show how the car rushed towards the border crossing at Niagara Falls at very high speed. However, things went wrong just before the Rainbow Bridge. The Bentley missed a turn and was catapulted into the air via a curb over the guardrail. Upon landing, the luxury car transformed into a fireball. A border guard was slightly injured in the spectacular accident.
According to initial information, the businessman and his wife had just stopped at a casino. They only stayed there for a few minutes, possibly only going to exchange money.
According to CNN reporter John Miller, the couple was on their way to a concert of the band ‘Kiss’ in Canada. However, the performance was canceled two hours before the start because one of the band members fell ill with the flu.
“No indications of terrorism”
As a precaution, all four border crossings between Canada and New York State were closed. Governor Kathy Hochul, however, quickly said there was no evidence of terrorism.
“This is an international border crossing. Of course, everyone is on their toes because of what is going on in the world,” he said. According to Miller, the cause may be due to a medical problem with the driver.
