Brics countries decide to expand by six countries

(corrects typo in placemark)

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) – The Brics group has agreed to accept new members.

South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa, host of the Brics Summit, announced on Thursday in Johannesburg that it had decided to admit six new countries as of January 1, 2024. Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates would be invited.

So far, the group of the most important emerging countries includes Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. An expansion, which China, for example, has been pushing for, is intended to give the bloc more global weight. China and Russia in particular are insisting on a counterweight to the West, while Brazil, on the other hand, rejects a frontline position with the G7 alliance of the most important western industrialized countries.
