Queen guitarist Brian May was knighted by King Charles at Buckingham Palace on Tuesday (March 14). The 75-year-old musician was honored both for his musical achievements and for his work as an animal rights activist. May told BBC News About the honor: “It’s a kind of license, a kind of mandate to continue with what I do and it gives me a little more strength for my purposes. I’m very happy about it.”

Brian May is not the only one on the list of honors this year: actor Stephen Graham, England women’s football team The Lionesses and comedian, actor and presenter Frank Skinner have also been decorated by King Charles. Leah Williamson, captain of the Lionesses, received the officer title (called OBE) in the Order’s formation, her teammates Lucy Bronze, Beth Mead and Ellen White were awarded “Member” (called MBE).

In early February, Brian May dashed all hopes that Queen would ever record new albums. The guitarist and co-founder of the British rock band said it couldn’t go on without Freddie Mercury. Mercury, who died of AIDS in November 1991, is the band’s still present source of strength, as May said on “Total Guitar”. The singer Adam Lambert has accompanied Queen on tour since 2012, but they only play old songs, the project operates under the name “Queen + Adam Lambert”.
