Breda court rules in case against rioters NAC stadium

The court in Breda will rule on Monday morning in the case against 27 suspects of the riots at the NAC stadium in May last year. On the first day of session, the Public Prosecution Service has demanded community service of up to two hundred hours and prison sentences of up to one hundred days.

After the defeat of NAC against NEC (1-2) on Sunday afternoon, May 23, 2021, riots broke out at the stadium in Breda. Police officers were terrified when they were pelted with fireworks, stones, crush barriers and beer bottles. They had never experienced this violence before and spoke of a war zone. Scooters were also destroyed and thrown into the water.

Ambulance and firefighters also received the full brunt as they resuscitated an NAC supporter who had become unwell. This man has passed away.

Several officers were injured and police vehicles were damaged. In total, the police, NAC and the municipality of Breda claim more than 60,000 euros in damage that they want to recover from the rioters. A few dozen police officers also claim personal compensation of up to 1000 euros per individual.

In the sentencing demands, the public prosecutor made a distinction between the destruction of goods and violence against persons. Higher sentences have been demanded for the latter offence.
