Breakthrough in investigation into car arson in Menen after FAROEK report: three men arrested | Farouk

The West Flanders public prosecutor’s office has arrested three men on suspicion of the deliberate arson of two cars in Menen in November last year. At the beginning of this month, our FAROEK investigation program distributed surveillance images of two men who set the cars on fire. That report has clearly contributed to the investigation, which is now ongoing.

On the night of November 24 to 25 last year, residents of Blekersstraat in Menen were startled awake by several loud bangs. Two cars are on fire in the street. A local resident films how some people try to push other cars away to prevent worse. Ultimately, the two cars are completely engulfed in flames. Some houses are also damaged: facades are blackened, shutters and window frames melted.

Just before, around 3 a.m., a surveillance camera in the street filmed how two men set the cars on fire using fire accelerators.

FAROEK

At the beginning of this year, our FAROEK program distributed the surveillance images in an investigation report. Our sister website 7sur7 also distributed the images. That clearly contributed to the research. The public prosecutor’s office has now arrested three men aged 41, 31 and 48. One of them comes from Mouscron, in Wallonia, the other two from northern France.

The three have now appeared before the council chamber and remain arrested on suspicion of the arson of the two cars, and on suspicion of attempted arson at night of two inhabited buildings in Blekersstraat.
