Breakthrough around canal drama? ‘Critical error in research, new sheet piles cause subsidence’ | Hardenberg

The real reason behind the damage to hundreds of houses along the Almelo-De Haandrik canal is not seen due to a crucial research error. That says former professor Stefan van Baars, who discovered the error.

According to him, it is not water extraction and climate change that cause all the misery, but work commissioned by the Province of Overijssel. “That is one hundred percent certain.” Deltares research agency, which is said to have made the mistake, has been requested in writing to correct it.

Earlier, findings by former professor Stefan van Baars prompted Deltares to conduct a second study along the canal, where 400 homeowners complained about damage after Overijssel deepened the waterway for larger shipping. But that research is also wrong, says Van Baars now.

The new sheet piles are longer and will end up in deeper sealing layers.
