The German basketball players will have to deny the European Championship without their captain Marie Gülich – a heavy setback for the DBB team who is aiming for a medal with the preliminary round in Hamburg at the upcoming European Championship (June 18 to 29).
As the DBB announced on Sunday, the 31-year-old tore the front cruciate ligament in the test game in Bamberg against the Czech Republic (70:86). This will fail the 1.96 m tall center player for the European Championship, in which the German team plays its group games in Hamburg.
“The fears after yesterday’s elimination of Marie Gülich in the friendly against the Czech Republic have been confirmed. We wish our captain a lot of strength on the way to the comeback and a quick recovery”explained the DBB.

For the DBB, Gülich’s failure is a serious setback with regard to the declared medal ambitions in the upcoming European Championship preliminary round. The center player is one of the leaders and one of the most experienced players in the team, she has several years in the WNBA Played and was a top performer at Valencia, in the strongest league in Europe. She played in Taiwan last season, and on her trip she also accompanied the ARD in a documentary.
WNBA professionals Sabally, Fiebich and Geiselsöder travel just before the European Championship
Broadcaster Lisa Thomaidis has to do so after the exceptional player Satou Sabally, who continues to go to the WNBA during the European Championship Phoenix Mercury Play, replace another top performer. Thomaidis must already improvise in the preparation, her team can hardly get in. The other WNBA players Nyara Sabally, Leonie Fiebich and Luisa Geiselsöder are currently still challenged in the US Profiliga and should only join the team shortly before the European Championship start.
The opening game for the German basketball players will take place on June 19 in Hamburg against Sweden.
The next test will be on the next Friday in Heidelberg, after which the DBB women will test against Belgium twice (June 12th and 14th)
