“Breakdowns” at a private concert in front of 400 fans

Yesterday, Sunday, Depeche Mode performed in front of around 400 fans, and they only found out about the “secret location” in Munich two days beforehand: the secret concert took place in the old congress hall. During their half-hour performance, the band feels as “tz” reports, there was a breakdown twice – despite months of rehearsals, as Martin Gore and Dave Gahan explained in an interview after the performance.

Depeche Mode warm up

After the unexpected death of keyboardist Andrew Fletcher, Dave Gahan and Martin Gore continue as a duo – in May, June and July they also play in Germany, Austria and Switzerland on their world tour. As a kind of warm-up, the private concert in Munich took place as part of the forthcoming release of their new album “Memento Mori” (March 24, 2023). There they performed in their live cast (with Christian Eigner, Peter Gordeno) as a foursome.

The two announced older songs were “Precious” and “Personal Jesus”. They also performed their latest single Ghosts Again, followed by Wagging Tongue and My Favorite Stranger (previously unreleased). In these two songs, they made mistakes – which is why Gahan asked for the pieces to be started from the beginning. Gore explained to the audience, “We’re still rehearsing.” The fans took it easy, according to the report.

Interview after the performance

During the 30-minute Q&A session after the performance, Gore and Gahan spoke to the host about the songs that went haywire. Gahan: “We could have done better”. To which Gore added, “Believe it or not, we’ve been rehearsing for a month, even if we don’t listen to it.”

About Memento Mori

Memento Mori will be released on March 24, 2023. Depeche Mode announced Memento Mori in early October 2022. Colleague Andrew Fletcher died unexpectedly on May 26, 2022 from an aortic dissection.

With the April 2023 issue of ROLLING STONE we are releasing a collector’s item: an exclusive vinyl single with two songs by Depeche Mode – on the A-side “Ghosts Again” from the new album “Memento Mori”, on the B-side the famous one Song “Never Let Me Down Again” from the album “Music For The Masses” (1987). The 7″ single comes in a sturdy, carefully designed cardboard sleeve and on heavyweight vinyl.

It is only available with the German edition of ROLLING STONE and not in record stores.

A – Side: “Ghosts Again”

B – Side: “Never Let Me Down Again”

At the same time, MUSIKEXPRESS will be released with a Depeche Mode single. In addition to “Ghosts Again” on the A-side, there is a noble engraving on the B-side instead of a second track. Depeche Mode’s new album and their Germany tour in June and July are among the biggest music events of the year. That’s why ROLLING STONE and MUSIKEXPRESS have teamed up for this unique cooperation.

Both singles are also available as a bundle.
