The World Cup qualifiers for Brazil and Argentina, which were suspended last September, will be played again, although both teams have already secured their place in the World Cup in Qatar.
So there is no stake in that game. However, the International Football Association Fifa considered that the qualifying game must be played to completion.
Both teams had previously argued that the suspended match should no longer be played. Fifa rejected the teams’ petitions.
The match in São Paulo, Brazil, was suspended just minutes after the opening kick when the Brazilian health authorities rushed to the field. Authorities said the Argentine Premier League players had violated the country’s corona regulations.
Fifa fined both teams almost € 50,000 for canceling the match.
In addition, the fine imposed on the Brazilian Football Association was reduced to just under EUR 240 000 and the fine imposed on the Argentine Football Association to just over EUR 95 000 for failure to arrange matches.
The new date for the qualifier is not yet known. However, the teams will face off in an international friendly in June.
