FC Volendam made a good impression in the friendly match against AEK Athens. The team of trainer Wim Jonk lost 1-2 to the Greek top club, but can look back on a successful duel.
The Volendam team started the game well. Daryl van Mieghem made the opening goal via a slip in the back of the Greeks. Halfway through the first half, AEK Athens equalized after a bounce by Filip Stankovic. The Serbian goalkeeper tried to take Ezequil Araujo out, but failed and he led the 1-1.
AEK Athens managed to put Volendam under considerable pressure in the subsequent phase. Despite the pressure, Volendam still tried to build up. Test player Diego Gustavo was in trouble midway through the second half after a risky build-up. He was therefore forced to make a foul, after which substitute Barry Lauwers had no chance on Michalis Kosidis’ penalty: 1-2.
FC Volendam will leave for Greece next week. There, the PhD student will play a practice match against Panathinaikos.
