After a very dry and hot summer, a below-average grain harvest is again expected in Brandenburg.

Based on the second harvest estimate in July, farmers were expecting a grain harvest of a good 2.2 million tons, the State Statistics Office announced on Wednesday.

This is more than three percent less than in the already poor harvest of the previous year. Compared to the six-year average, the minus is even nine percent.

According to the statisticians, only winter barley is expected to yield 610,400 tons, which is 15 percent higher than last year. The long-term average is almost 530,000 tons.

There should also be a higher harvest of winter rape: 285,300 tons are expected after almost 260,000 tons last year. However, according to the State Statistical Office, the area under cultivation for winter rape has increased by almost 12 percent to 97,000 hectares compared to the previous year.
