Brand new Peugeot 5008 stolen: “Perpetrators intercepted the frequency of the remote control with a dirt-cheap device” | Menin

Barely a few hundred meters from the place where a brutal home invasion took place a few hours earlier, a car was picked up early on Saturday morning on the Meester Ameyeplein in Lauwe. “I am well insured, but this will cost me quite a bit of money,” sighs the owner.

Rudy Thys (49) wanted to do some end-of-year shopping on Saturday morning. But he was very surprised when he saw that there was another car where he had parked his Peugeot 5008 the night before. The facts occurred on Meester Ameyeplein, which leads onto Larstraat in Lauwe. “I called the police. There they checked whether my car had been towed for some reason. This appeared to not be the case. So it was stolen.”

Cool trick

When the news of the theft broke, Rudy heard from someone that his car was definitely still there at 4 o’clock. “At 8:30 am that was no longer the case,” he says. “According to the police, the perpetrators undoubtedly used a device with which they can intercept the frequency of the remote control. If they succeed, they gain access to the car in no time and it is a breeze to drive away with it. Such a device is freely available for sale on the internet for around 100 euros. There are even videos online that show in detail how it works. Unbelievable, actually.”

I would prefer that my car, which was immediately reported, be found. But then the question is of course what condition it is in

Car signaled

On June 13 of this year, Rudy was proud to pick up his new car from his dealer. “And now I’ve lost it again,” he sighs. “Not exactly a nice end-of-year gift. I may be well insured, but this will still cost me a lot of money. I would prefer that my car, which was immediately reported, be found. But then the question is of course what condition he is in.”

Metal box

Rudy finds it amazing how easy it is to commit such a theft. “Yet you can avoid it as an owner, I hear. But then your key must be 15 meters away from the place where the perpetrators are looking for frequencies with their device. Another option is to always place your car key in a metal box that protects against radiation from the device in question.”
