Many Muslims are very concerned about the PVV’s victory in the House of Representatives elections. Mohammed Aknin, from Muslim Empowerment Tilburg, has his WhatsApp full on Wednesday evening with messages from concerned fellow believers.
“I am particularly shocked by the large number of Dutch people who apparently think the same way as Geert Wilders,” says Aknin. “I did not expect that. “Aknin is the leader of Muslim Empowerment Tilburg and a figurehead in Tilburg North for many Muslims.
“Afraid of a ban on headscarves.”
The messages he reads on social media and in his WhatsApp show that many residents of Tilburg Noord are afraid of the consequences of the election results. “I notice that people are afraid that there will soon be a ban on headscarves, for example.”
Wilders said in his victory speech on Wednesday evening that if he becomes prime minister, he will be for all Dutch people. “Regardless of where you come from and what your faith is.”
Mohammed Aknin has enough faith in the Dutch rule of law to believe that Wilders must also adhere to the law and the constitution.
“A fox does not lose his tricks.”
However, he does not expect Wilders to soften in his expressions. “A fox loses its hair but not its tricks. Over the past twenty years he has been clear in what he thinks. We just have to wait and see what he can do next.”
The PVV was never the largest in Brabant. You can read more about the elections in us results blog.
