FC Bayern wanted to say goodbye to the international break and the Oktoberfest with a win. It was a 0:1 at FC Augsburg. Is there danger for coach Julian Nagelsmann? A Bayern coach has already had to leave during the Oktoberfest.
It should have been so easy at FC Bayern this weekend and the next few weeks: A win against the FC Augsburgon Sunday (September 18th, 2022) together to the Oktoberfest and with a lot of self-confidence and good mood in the international break.
Salihamidzic lacks the desire for the Oktoberfest measure
Nobody at Bayern wanted to count on a defeat. And so the keyword “crisis” should be used quite often after the 0: 1 at FC Augsburg in the coming weeks. In any case, sports director Hasan Salihamidzic was pissed off: “Three points from four games – I don’t know if I like the measure,” he said in view of the desolate Bundesliga series with three draws and the most recent defeat.
Thomas Müller and the “sloppy” Bavarians
Thomas Müller also lost interest in the Oktoberfest as a result of the defeat. “I like to let the Oktoberfest be the Oktoberfest. Of course we will go there, but we should have won today,” he said in an exclusive interview with BR24 Sport after the game.
The causes of the defeat? “Either we were too sloppy or the goalkeeper made a great save or a combination of these,” said Müller. What he means by that: Bayern once again gave a very disappointing picture when it came to converting chances, although FC Augsburg goalkeeper Rafal Gikiewicz, who was in a brilliant mood, also played a part in this.
Bayern clearly superior statistically
68.7 percent ball possession, 21 shots on goal (Augsburg only had nine), 612 passes played, 83.8 percent of which were successful (FC Augsburg: 120 / 54.1 percent). If you look at the sober figures, Bayern should have swept over Augsburg like a hurricane.
“Can also win 10:2”
“I think we can win the game 10-2 today, but in the end we’re 0-1 there,” said Müller, summing up the annoying afternoon from Bayern’s point of view, but he also added self-critically: “It wasn’t just bad luck , but we already have our shares in there. You just have to convert such good opportunities.”
Nagelsmann’s insight: the “simple means” were missing
FC Bayern coach Julian Nagelsmann judged similarly. “When I see the statistics, we should have won,” he said aptly after the game and argued: “After the 1-0 it was very difficult, we could have used simple means to play in the space behind the chain, but we have a lot Given overweight situations and played very laissez-faire in the last third.”
That means: The coach sees the problems, but the team is currently unable to implement his match plan, which is why Nagelsmann is quite realistic about the next few days: “The trend is not good. I think about everything – about me, about the situation, about all.” The Wiesn visit on Sunday? If the trainer has his way, he could also drop out.
Salihamidzic strengthens the coach’s back
Nagelsmann knows the laws of the industry. The chair of the five-year coach could start to wobble in his second season. After all: Sports director Salihamidzic gave demonstrative support after the game.
“It means to him what it means to all of us. That we have to win the next game now,” said Salihamidzic about the coach: “The boys are now going to the national team, which is not ideal now, but when they come back, they will we prepare and try to win the game against Leverkusen. It’s all up to us now, not just Julian Nagelsmann.”
Niko Kovac saves himself after the Wiesn
Ancelotti’s successor Niko Kovac was a little luckier. After a 3-0 home defeat against Mönchengladbach and the international break that followed in September 2018, he and his team had to start their Oktoberfest visit with a lot of frustration: Bayern didn’t even have a place in the Champions League.
But Kovac got the team back on track and celebrated championship and DFB Cup victory. He was only released a season later, in November 2019. In his second FC Bayern season.

Memories of the Ancelotti dismissal
After seven match days, FC Bayern is now three points behind Borussia Dortmund, who are supposedly the toughest championship rivals. Only three points. But wasn’t there something? In September 2017, the then FC Bayern coach Carlo Ancelotti had to leave during the Oktoberfest. He and his team were also three points behind Dortmund, but they were after six games.
The final straw came in a 3-0 Champions League defeat by Paris Saint-Germain. “I think what we saw tonight wasn’t Bayern Munich,” said then-CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge in the evening. A day later, the club announced the separation from Ancelotti, who – like Nagelsmann – had won the championship title in his first season but had been unlucky in the Champions League and Cup.
