The Berlin Volleys qualified for the quarter-finals of the German Volleyball Cup after a five-set thriller.

At arch-rivals VfB Friedrichshafen on Saturday, the cup defender from the capital won 3-2 (25:20, 22:25, 26:28, 25:19, 15:13) after being 1-2 down. Diagonal attacker Marek Sotola used the second match point to win.

The volleys were initially in control with their strong serve game. But the team had problems when they not only lost a five-point lead (13:8) and later a 20:17 lead in the third round, but in the end they were also unable to use two set points. Ultimately, the tiebreak had to be decided, in which VfB was consistently up to two points behind.

SC Potsdam also made it to the quarterfinals for women’s volleyball. Coach Riccardo Boieri’s team clearly won 3-0 (25:13, 25:21, 25:21) against Bundesliga bottom team VC Neuwied 77 on Saturday.

In front of only 150 spectators in Neuwied, the American Danielle Harbin was the winner’s most successful attacker with ten points.
