The BR Volleys have been German volleyball champions twelve times. Now they are aiming for their 13th title win.
“We brought in a lot of good people who give you the feeling that something good will come out of it in the end,” said the managing director Kaweh Niroomand before the season opener in the Bundesliga at TSV Haching Munich on Sunday (4 p.m.).
Just eight days ago, the Volleys with a 1B team easily defeated Bayern 3-0 at the Bounce House Cup in Hildesheim.
Miracles are not to be expected from the German champions at the start of the season. The departure of top performers such as Sergey Grankin and Benjamin Patch as well as the integration of a total of six new players has changed the statics in the team significantly.
“We’re not as well-rehearsed as we were last season. There might be bumps and stumbles at one point or another for us at the beginning,” said Niroomand.
But in the long run, the BR Volleys are confident that they will be able to make up for the loss of their world-class setter, Grankin. “Last year we had players with us who sometimes went into the hall with the attitude: Oh, the Grankin, he’ll do it!” says Niroomand. “Now everyone is asked, everyone has to lend a hand.”
TSV Haching was ninth last season and thus last after the normal round. In this respect, the game at Bayern serves the BR Volleys more as a warm-up for the home game against their eternal rival VfB Friedrichshafen a week later.
