With such a double deck trailer or DDT (‘double deck trailer’) in the jargon, 69 containers with parcels and letters can be transported between the sorting and distribution centres. ‘Only’ 44 post containers fit in an ordinary trailer. That means fewer trucks on the road. That is better for the environment, the postal company argues.
In time, the standard trailers from bpost’s truck fleet will be systematically replaced by the brand new DDTs. In 2023, the truck fleet will already consist of 14 such double-decker semi-trailers, in 2024 of 38 units. The fleet currently has ten. It concerns the gigantic-looking trucks of the Dutch company Burgers.
The new trailers will be purchased, not leased. A number of the trailers will be equipped with user-friendly movable floors and with solar panels to operate the movable floor and tailgate.
Today, bpost’s total truck fleet consists of 650 trucks/tractors and 330 trailers.
