BP denies ex-boss up to £32m for misconduct

LONDON (dpa-AFX) – The energy company BP is refusing to pay out its former boss Bernard Looney of up to 32.4 million pounds (37.6 million euros) due to serious misconduct. Looney was dismissed without notice on Wednesday. The company told the British news agency PA on Wednesday that he had provided “inaccurate and incomplete” information about relationships with colleagues. “The board has determined that this constitutes serious misconduct.”

The sum therefore consists of salary and pension payments, bonuses and shares. In addition, money that has already been transferred from Looney will be demanded back, including half of the bonus for the 2022 financial year.

BP veteran Looney was appointed CEO at the beginning of 2020. He had driven the transformation of one of the world’s largest oil companies into the post-fossil fuel era, but then rolled back some of the most ambitious goals and increased spending on oil and gas again. He resigned in September 2023 due to previous relationships with colleagues./bvi/DP/ngu
