Proceeds from the publication will go to a charity selected by O’Connor’s estate.
Whether on stage or on social media – after Sinéad O’Connor died on July 26, 2023 at the age of 56, several musicians paid her a final tribute. The band Boygenius is now also honoring the singer with a cover version of “The Parting Glass” – a traditional Irish and Scottish folk song that the late artist published in 2002.
For “The Glass of Farewell” – as the song title is translated into German – the indie rock group, consisting of Phoebe Bridgers, Julien Baker and Lucy Dacus, brings the Irish folk duo Ye Vagabonds on board. As a tribute to the Irish singer, they will release the track together on November 17th. Proceeds from the re-recording will benefit charities – particularly the Aisling Project, selected by O’Connor’s estate. The organization is “an extracurricular project that works with children and young people growing up in a disadvantaged area in Dublin, Ireland,” said the musicians in a recent Instagram post.
Phoebe Bridgers, who is also active as a solo artist, expressed in August 2023 what an inspiration the late singer had been for her. “Even before I heard Sinéad’s music, I knew she was a revolutionary. “I was obsessed with her and the video for ‘Nothing Compares 2 U,'” the 29-year-old told Rolling Stone, recounting how she shaved her hair as a teenager to look like her. Bridgers continues: “Whether it’s the Famine, the Catholic Church or Margaret Thatcher, history is on their side in a way it wasn’t back then. People and the media weren’t kind to her.”
Boygenius only released their debut album THE RECORD in March 2023. The EP THE REST followed just a few months later, which the supergroup announced on their tour in the summer.
