Boygenius revitalize the supergroup concept

They could have called themselves Baker, Bridgers & Dacus. Like Emerson, Lake & Palmer. But Boygenius is better.

Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers and Lucy Dacus capture the story in the band name
of previous supergroups: guys who think they are geniuses. Or be held.

Queer friendship project

Her revival of the supergroup concept is at the same time its reinterpretation into a queer friendship project. Boygenius are not the first supergroup made up of women: Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris released “Trio” in 1987, where they covered, among other things, the Phil Spector piece “To Know Him Is To Love Him”. (Baker, Bridgers & Dacus probably don’t plan to.)

Boygenius are in the running for several Grammys this year, in an almost all-female field of nominees. There are good reasons to assume that the next supergroups will also be female – and that
They then no longer need clever, ironic names like Boygenius.
