Boy of 12 still in danger after accident in Torhout

A tragic accident. In short, that is the conclusion of the traffic expert of the public prosecutor’s office after the accident in Torhout in which a boy suffered life-threatening injuries yesterday morning.

According to the first findings of the expert, the victim in the accident in Sint-Jozefstraat faltered on the cyclist next to him. As a result, they both fell. The victim ended up in the lane for oncoming traffic, so that the passing car could no longer avoid a collision.

The 12-year-old boy is still fighting for his life. He suffered a severe brain injury in the collision. The boy has since undergone surgery.

The accident happened in Sint-Jozefstraat in Torhout, just after 8 o’clock this morning, near Vives University of Applied Sciences. The boy was hit by a car, fell and was seriously injured. He was taken to the AZ Delta hospital in Rumbeke in a critical condition. The Sint-Jozefstraat is a bicycle street. This means that motorists are not allowed to overtake cyclists and that there is a speed limit of 30 km/h.
