Boy falls on railroad crossing as trees close, bystander helps

A cyclist barely escaped a passing train on Monday at the level crossing at Mierloseweg and Hoofdstraat in Helmond. He fell in the middle of the transition and got stuck with his bike. A passerby saw it happen and quickly came to the rescue.

The boy wanted to cross the railway in the Helmond district of Mierlo-Hout around ten to eight in the morning when things went wrong. Images show that he falls in the middle of the railway crossing. The boy manages to get up quickly. But when he tries to get away, his bike snags.

While the boy tries with all his might to get his bicycle loose, the railway barriers close. Fortunately, a passerby sees it happen, because he jumps off his bike and runs towards the boy. The man manages to get the bicycle loose and runs with the boy to the side of the transition.

More often wrong
Things often go wrong at the level crossing at Mierlo-Hout. In November last year, a 14-year-old boy was hit by a motorist, who quickly drove across the crossing while the barriers closed. And in 2017, a scooter driver drove straight through a railway barrier.

Last month, the barriers were down for almost an hour due to a malfunction. Dozens of people decided not to wait for that and slipped past the railway barriers, much to the dismay of ProRail. Trains had to run at a walking pace because of the dangerous situation.
