Boy becomes mayor and hardly believes it himself: ‘Very unreal’

He succeeded, the 31-year-old Boy Scholtze becomes the new mayor of the municipality of Drimmelen. Thursday evening he got the good news. “It took a while to get to me. It’s very unreal what’s going on, but I’m very happy and honoured.”

The brand new mayor had to explain something about his current work in Tilburg on Friday morning. He is currently operational manager of project development and property management, but that will soon change. “I was suprised. I hoped it would be me because it’s a dream. As mayor you can really make a difference.”

“We’ve been on ‘secret mission’ a few times.”

It was therefore a conscious choice to apply for the vacancy of the municipality of Drimmelen. Scholtze has secretly spent quite a bit of time there lately. “My husband and I have gone on ‘secret mission’, as we called it, a number of times. It immediately felt really good. Then I took the gamble and wrote the letter.”

Scholtze is the lucky one out of eighteen applications and from mid-December he can call himself the youngest mayor of the Netherlands. Despite his age, he already has quite a bit of knowledge and experience. “There is no mayor’s school or anything like that, but I have a background in public administration. In addition, I have been active in local politics for ten years and I have read myself well in the documents that can be found.”

“I am curious about the assignment that comes with the Red Lantern.”

Scholtze will be installed as mayor on December 21. He also receives the Red Lantern, the trophy for the youngest mayor of the Netherlands, from the current youngest mayor of the Netherlands. “I’ve heard there’s an assignment involved. So I’m curious about that too.”

Until then, the youngest mayor will prepare himself well for his new position. “I still want to learn a lot from the residents, what there is to do and which associations there are. I strive to be open and approachable and really want to be a part of the community. So far, the reactions have been very positive. I already feel very welcome.”
