Boxer Simiso Buthelezi dies at the age of 24 – Jussi Posti assesses tragedy

South African boxer Simiso Buthelezi, 24, received a blow last Sunday that took the man’s life. Neurosurgeon Jussi Posti is going through a tragedy.

The vision is absurd.

Simiso Buthelezi turns his opponent’s back and sets off to sneak towards the corner of the perimeter. At the same time, he shakes the air with his hands, as if he is recklessly boxing his shadow.

The man is quite confused and the referee interrupts the match in the tenth installment.

The special chain of events was probably the result of an attack a couple of seconds earlier that Buthelezin got on the chin of his opponent Siphesihle Mntungwa fist.

– After that, he began to behave confusedly, docent of neurosurgery and chief physician of the department Jussi Posti Says Turku University Central Hospital.

According to the post, Buthelez’s forehead block was likely to collide with the bottom of the skull as the boxer’s head sagged slightly backwards from the force of the blow.

– This will cause bleeding inside the frontal lobes. It gradually began to expand, and the boxer then lost sight of the prevailing conditions.

Grief news

On Monday, it became known that Buthelezi had suffered a brain injury during the match. He suffered a cerebral hemorrhage and lay in a coma.

– The purpose of anesthesia is to reduce cerebral edema and reduce the brain’s need for energy. It creates better conditions for the brain to tolerate serious brain injury, Posti knows.

On Wednesday, the South African Boxing Federation reported on Twitter that Buthelezi is dead.

– It happened as it often does. Brain injury is a continuum. The bleeding had progressed, and there was probably other damage to his brain, so he died, Posti estimates.

Based on a video spread on social media, Buthelez’s last blow wasn’t very heavy, so the consequences surprised everyone.

– It looked relatively light, yes. Usually, this supposed cerebral hemorrhage requires more energy, but I’ve seen this happen over the course of my career.

Could the cerebral hemorrhage have been due to some other reason?

– A person his age will not, if he has been healthy before, Posti says.

– There are, of course, many other types of cerebral hemorrhages that may be due to a rupture of a cerebral artery, but this situation does not seem to be the case. Yes, I associate the blow to his head with the cerebral hemorrhage.

Problems

With good luck, 24-year-old Buthelezi could have survived the cerebral hemorrhage, but it would still have likely caused him neuropsychological problems.

– They can be seen as confusion, lack of impulse control or aggression, but also as an inability to take the initiative, Posti says.

According to the Post, younger people usually cope with accidental cerebral haemorrhage “moderately well”, but the prognosis for people over 60 is starting to decline.

– However, this is a very rough estimate, because there can be very different types of bleeding in the brain, Posti recalls.

Boxing is a raw sport. According to Jussi Post, it doesn’t make any sense. AOP

Brutal species

Boxing is a brutal sport that leaves its mark on contestants. For example, after a ten-year career, the brain is barely in 100 percent condition.

– It would be very unlikely even if the boxer was never knocked out. During such a career, you get so many small blows to the head, Posti knows.

Studies show that the brain is quite vulnerable to even small recurrent injuries that can cause, for example, progressive cerebral palsy.

– It can be quite a lot like the neurodegenerative diseases found in the elderly, such as Alzheimer’s disease. It’s a little different in symptoms, but it starts in boxers decades earlier than in normal Alzheimer’s patients.

Does boxing as a sport make any sense if it causes such problems for humans?

– According to the neurosurgeon’s assessment, it doesn’t make any sense, Posti says directly.

– It is quite common opinion in this profession.
