Bourtange asks for more buses in the weekend: ‘You are difficult to reach, we were told’

More buses will have to run on weekends than is currently the case to a major tourist attraction such as the Bourtange fortress.

This is stated by the Vesting Bourtange Foundation (SVB), which manages the museums and hotel rooms in the village and organizes major events there, such as Vesting Spectaculum in the coming weekend.

Hardly publicity

According to SVB manager Hendri Meendering, public transport to Bourtange is relatively well organized on working days. ,,But in the weekends when it is the busiest here, it is much less. Then there is a hub taxi, but it is hardly publicized, many people don’t know that.

In addition to that taxi, according to Meendering, more buses should run on Saturdays and Sundays. “One every hour, that would be very nice. From Vlagtwedde and other places. So that people from outside the region, including from the city of Groningen, can get here better by public transport. We have also heard that wish at various holiday fairs that we attended.

Not easy

The fortress board has submitted its wish to the OV Bureau Groningen Drenthe and also to the municipal council of Westerwolde. Alderman Henk van der Goot says he wants to do his best, but also makes it clear that it is not easy to comply with the SVB’s request.

The Bourtange fortress is visited every year by about 80,000 people who buy a ticket for the museums or an event. In total, more than 200,000 people take a look inside the ramparts every year.
