Bottom line Jong Ajax surprises with a win over title candidate Willem II

Jong Ajax has won for the second time this season. The Amsterdam talents defeated Willem II 1-0 in front of their own audience. The only goal came from Stanis Idumbo Muzambo. With the victory, Young Ajax climbs one place to position nineteen.

If you looked at the rankings in advance, the difference between red lantern bearer Jong Ajax and number two Willem II was very large. There was little sign of this on the field. After nine minutes, Stanis Idumbo Muzambo scored the opening goal. The Belgian right winger was served by his compatriot Mika Godts and neatly shot the ball with his left leg into the far corner, 1-0.

After the surprising lead, Young Ajax with Ahmetcan Kaplan in the starting line-up remained the better side, but coach Dave Vos’ team did not express this in a larger lead before halftime.

In the second half, Willem II put a lot of pressure on Jong Ajax’s half. However, the number two of the first division created almost no chances. Young Ajax tried through counters, but there was a lack of care.

In the absolute final phase, goalkeeper Charlie Setford had to take action twice more. He did well and helped ensure that the three points remained in Amsterdam. The second victory of the season naturally produced many happy faces. The talented Amsterdammers will go to Breda on Friday for the confrontation with NAC.

Line-up Young Ajax: Setford; Gooijer, Aertssen, Kaplan (Verschuren/46), Agougil; Brandes, Salah-Eddine, Chourak; Idumbo Muzambo, Banel, Godts
