Both Macron and Scholz ready for long war in Ukraine | Abroad

At the Munich International Security Conference, French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz stressed their willingness to continue supporting Ukraine for as long as necessary.

Macron called on allies to further increase military support to Ukraine so that the country can launch a counter-offensive. “It is Moscow that has made the choice to start a war,” said the French president. “It is now stepping up the fight, committing war crimes and attacking civilian infrastructure. This is not the right time for dialogue.”

Macron called on other European countries to invest more in defence, especially air defense, to enforce peace on the continent. He announced the plan to organize a conference in Paris on joint European air defense.

Earlier in the day, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz also said it is wise to be prepared for a long war. He stressed the importance of continuing to support Ukraine, without speculating on when the conflict will end. According to Scholz, a majority of the German population supports that position.

The international conference on security issues and international relations has been held at the Hotel Bayerischer Hof in the Bavarian capital for sixty years. Last year’s conference ended a few days before the Russian invasion on February 24, 2022. This month’s conference will run from February 17 to 19. Russia is not invited.
