Borussia Mönchengladbach: Joris Chotard top candidate to succeed Koné

Among the most valuable in Montpellier

In mid-October, Borussia Mönchengladbach announced that Manu Koné’s contract had been extended for another year until 2026 thanks to a clause. However, it is questionable whether the 22-year-old Frenchman will play in the Lower Rhine for that long due to persistent rumors of a transfer. As the “Picture“ reports that, just in case, the search for a successor has been in full swing for months and is already well advanced. Joris Chotard from Montpellier HSC is considered the top candidate.

Like Koné, Chotard is 22 years old and trained as a professional in Montpellier. The defensive midfielder has been a member of the first team squad since 2019 and played 142 games in which he scored two goals and provided ten assists. He is mainly used in the double six alongside Jordan Ferri.

A few weeks ago, Montpellier coach Michel Der Zakarian described Chotard as an “important player” at a press conference: “He doesn’t take many risks, but he makes good decisions and plays fairly. Like every player, he has moments when he doesn’t feel so good, but he continues to develop. He plays a lot more forward, which is why he is able to make crucial passes. He is a boy who is intelligent and can read the game well. He does things well. He wins a lot of balls and even though he is not a very fast player, he is strong. He positions himself well and manages to find the right distance to intervene.”

Chotard and Omlin reunited at Borussia Mönchengladbach?

With a market value of 9 million euros, Chotard is the second most valuable professional in the squad. If the French U21 international, who plays with Koné in the “Équipe Tricolore”, is possibly signed, Gladbach captain Jonas Omlin, who is currently injured, could play an important role: The Swiss keeper knows Chotard from his time in Montpellier and is expected to be a big one be an advocate. The two were on the field together 60 times.

With a view to the upcoming winter transfer period, Gladbach sports director Roland Virkus told “Bild”: “The plan is for us to go into the second half of the season with the same squad as we have now. But as a club you always have to be prepared for all scenarios, stay humble, always want to improve and constantly keep your eyes open.” In addition to Chotard, Pape Gueye from Olympique Marseille and Ibrahima Sissoko from RC Strasbourg Alsace are also linked to Borussia.
