Weigl would like to stay
After the next setback, Borussia Mönchengladbach’s sports director Roland Virkus expects an improvement in performance in the four remaining games in the Bundesliga. “It’s about ending the season sensibly,” he said on Saturday after the 1-2 (0-1) defeat at relegation contenders VfB Stuttgart. “It’s our job to start the summer break in a positive mood.”

He and midfielder Julian Weigl understand the frustration of the supporters, who turned away from the team after the final whistle. “The guest block is always full at our away games. But it doesn’t help us when our fans dance with their backs to us,” said Weigl, who converted a hand penalty to make it 1-1 in the meantime (78th minute). “That doesn’t give us any push, but it’s also not a reproach.”
Coach Farke criticizes fans of Borussia Mönchengladbach
However, the action was not so well received by coach Daniel Farke. “There is no reason to turn away from this team if you boil down the emotions a bit and evaluate the story objectively – quite the opposite,” criticized the 46-year-old (quoted via “Picture“). “I said that to the boys right after the game. Our attitude, the mentality, the will to defend the jersey with the diamond, there is nothing to criticize.”

Farke continued on the performance against VfB: “The team gave their all, our fans gave their all. I’m also disappointed about the defeat. We played without key players, and we can’t say we were lucky either. Even with ten men outnumbered when we threw in some youngsters, we fought to the end to take something with us.”
Borussia Mönchengladbach away weak – Weigl would like to stay
Borussia, who had to end the game in Stuttgart with a man down after Ko Itakura was sent off (82nd), has only won one away game and only nine points in total. “It’s a stupid, annoying defeat,” said Virkus, who admitted after the third winless game in a row: “There is currently a lack of self-confidence.”
A change in personnel is imminent at Gladbach after this season. Weigl, currently on loan from Benfica, says he would like to stay. “It is a great attraction to continue to be part of this team and to push something. But things have to be changed,” said the 27-year-old. “We need to get hunger and greed back into the team. It’s not about qualifying for the Champions League straight away, it’s about constantly developing.”
