Borussia Mönchengladbach: Hofmann contradicts Virkus because of the transfer to Bayer Leverkusen

Before seeing you again with Gladbach

Jonas Hofmann has contradicted statements that he had given his ex-club Borussia Mönchengladbach a promise to stay immediately before moving to Bayer Leverkusen. “I’ve always been loyal. Gladbach made me an offer, yes. But it was important for me to say to Borussia: ‘There is one or the other possibility,'” Hofmann told “Sport Bild” and assured that Gladbach was “always” his first point of contact.

The 31-year-old offensive force surprisingly made use of an exit clause of 10 million euros at the beginning of July, which left sports director Roland Virkus annoyed. “It depends on the way. Jonas agreed to us and canceled again a day later,” Virkus told the Rheinische Post at the “Rheinische Bundesliga-Gipfel”. In the “foals” the right winger was intended as a fixed point in the squad and was considered the new captain.

Gladbach is the Bundesliga club that lost the most quality for the lowest transfer fee this summer: the departures of Marcus Thuram (26, Inter), Lars Stindl (34, KSC), Ramy Bensebaini (28, BVB) and Hofmann only washed that up mentioned 10 million euros in the coffers. The quartet scored 46 goals out of 62 in 2022/23.

Reunion between Hofmann and Gladbach is imminent: “It will be emotional”

Gladbach and Hofmann meet again on Saturday evening, then the “foals” welcome the “Werkself”. It is assumed that Hofmann, unlike Granit Xhaka (30), who was also from Gladbach, is not welcomed with open arms by most of the fans. “I expect mixed feelings,” believes the right-footer, but hopes “that many people will see the positives from the seven and a half years and not the last moment. “Unfortunately, for many people, that has a higher priority than seven and a half years.” Nevertheless, Hofmann, who played 214 games with 48 goals and 51 assists for the team from the Lower Rhine, was “purely looking forward to it. It gets emotional.”
