Borussia Mönchengladbach has extended the contract early with the regular replacement goalkeeper Moritz Nicolas (26). As the foals announced on Friday, the working paper is no longer valid until 2026, but rather until 2029. Nicolas has appeared in 24 games so far this season because regular keeper and captain Jonas Omlin (30) was out for a longer period of time with a shoulder injury. However, the Swiss is likely to return to goal in the near future.

“Mo has confirmed the trust we have placed in him with excellent performances and has therefore absolutely earned this long-term contract extension,” said Borussia’s managing director Roland Virkus. They are very pleased that “we have such an excellent team at the goalkeeper position.” Nicolas moved from Rot-Weiss Essen to Borussia’s second team in 2015, and the following year he moved into the professional squad. The former DFB junior only made his debut in 2022, and has since been loaned out to 1. FC Union Berlin, VfL Osnabrück, FC Viktoria Köln and Roda JC Kerkrade in the Netherlands. Since returning to Borussia last year, Nicolas has increased his market value from 350,000 to currently 1.5 million euros.

“The loans were important for me to gain experience and match practice. But it was always my goal to return to Borussia at some point. That was in the back of my mind the whole time. That’s why I’m happy to be back here now. “This year feels like we’ve arrived,” Nicolas is quoted as saying. “Before the season, I certainly couldn’t have expected that I would be able to look back on so many Bundesliga games in March. It has been a very educational time for me so far. I developed further through training and especially the games. I want to keep at it, collect more playing minutes and improve my personal performance.”
