Borussia Mönchengladbach: Coach Farke calls for “a good transfer summer”

New coach introduced

Daniel Farke starts his new job as head coach of Borussia Mönchengladbach with anticipation and humility. “It’s a moment that fills me with joy and a bit of pride,” said the 45-year-old at his official presentation on Sunday. “I am approaching this task with great gratitude for the trust placed in me. Hopefully we can lead this club into a good future together.”

The 45-year-old signed a contract until 2025 on Saturday and follows Adi Hütter, from whom the club from the Lower Rhine had separated after 37 games with a point average of 1.38. “First of all, it’s not my issue to evaluate what happened in the past,” said Farke. “I am convinced that we have a very, very good basis.”

The current squad offers “a lot of potential”, but that alone will probably not be enough: “Of course we need a good transfer summer and have to make good decisions.” Missing out on European competitions and the resulting lack of income could make it difficult to find reinforcements to get. “It is not easy to fulfill all wishes with the financial circumstances,” said Farke, but still looked positively to the future: “We are all very, very hopeful that we will succeed in a good way.”

It is still too early to talk about what exactly will happen at Borussia in terms of personnel. “Now is not the right time to speculate about individual personal details and positions. We will do that in due course,” Farke said. What is already certain is that central defender Matthias Ginter (28) will leave SC Freiburg free of charge, and the contracts of twelve professionals with a total value of 96.5 million euros will expire in 2023. If no agreement can be found with the relevant players, the last chance to achieve an adequate fee would be in the summer. Money that could in turn be spent on newcomers.

Born in Büren, Westphalia, Farke made a name for himself working at Norwich City. He twice led the Canaries to the Premier League. Most recently he was hired by FK Krasnodar in Russia, but gave up the job after a short time due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
