Borussia Mönchengladbach: broad rider candidate for Hütter successor?

High on the Gladbach list

“He likes it here and the prospect of the European Cup is also very motivating for him. He also feels how much the team appreciates him,” said Zurich President Ancillo Canepa recently confidently with a view to a possible whereabouts of master coach André Breitenreiter. The 48-year-old still has a contract with the newly crowned Swiss title holder until 2023, but in view of the open coaching positions in the Bundesliga, he is increasingly being associated with a return to Germany – information from the newspaper is considered to be a serious prospect.ViewAccording to Borussia Mönchengladbach.

Breitenreiter, who took a two-and-a-half-year hiatus from his job on the sidelines last summer before starting his engagement in Zurich, was recently linked to Galatasaray Istanbul – but speculation about an offer from the Bosporus turned out to be wrong. According to “Blick”, the future of the coach at FCZ is “more and more questionable”. Accordingly, the ex-coach from SC Paderborn, Schalke 04 and Hannover 96 in Mönchengladbach is “high on the list” as a potential successor to Adi Hütter.

It can be assumed that the name Breitenreiter will also be traded in Wolfsburg, Berlin, Bielefeld and Augsburg. Born in Lower Saxony, he had made no secret of being open to offers in the past. However, he will only make a decision after the season has been analyzed, at the earliest in the coming week: “I will only reflect and let everything sink in after the season. Then we’ll know more.” With the games in Lugano on Thursday and the last home game against FC Luzern on Sunday, Zurich still has two opponents to contend with this week.

FC Zurich: Gladbach target Breitenreiter and the dream of the premier class

In its first year, Breitenreiter surprisingly led the traditional club to its first title in the Swiss Super League since 2009. Of the past five years, FCZ had previously spent one in the second division and three in relegation battles, the squad value of the team is well behind that of league leaders FC Basel and BSC Young Boys. With a record of 23 wins and only four defeats from 34 games to date and an average of 2.22 points per game, the German managed to become the second most successful FCZ coach of the past 50 years.

Breitenreiter’s future should also depend on the further development of the squad. In view of the strong performances in the current season, some players have aroused the desires of other clubs: the contract of goalgetter Assan Ceesay (supposedly interested is FC Basel) expires, as does that of Ousmane Doumbia. Midfielder Antonio Marchesano (contract until 2023) could still generate a fee if sold in the summer. The two most valuable players, Becir Omeragic and Wilfried Gnonto, have been linked to European clubs for months. However, President Canepa is not afraid of an imminent sell-out in Zurich: “We have ideas on how we can expand and complement the squad. But we are also prepared for one or the other departure.”

“I would really like to hear the Champions League anthem – preferably with FCZ,” said Breitenreiter in an interview with “Kicker” at the beginning of the year. At least as of now, the chances are much better in Zurich than, for example, on the Lower Rhine: the club has already taken the first step in terms of European competition by excluding the Russian teams. Zurich starts in the second qualifying round, the club would have to survive at least three rounds in order to be able to get involved in the “premier class”. President Canepa does not rule out the latter: “As I know the team and the coach, they would like to knock in the Champions League if at all possible.”
