The announcement by China and Russia could be the basis for a powerful alliance between the two authoritarian regimes, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Josep Borrell said. He said this at a meeting with the former head of the French General Planning Commission Jean Monnet, broadcast velo EU Delegation to the US on Twitter.
“The joint statement by China and Russia, which the West has not particularly noticed behind the situation in Ukraine, could become the basis for a powerful alliance of two authoritarian regimes,” Borrell said.
He noted that now Moscow and Beijing “oppose democracy as authoritarian, not communist regimes,” as they did during the Cold War.
Earlier, US President Joe Biden called the Russian-Chinese rapprochement not new.
