Borna Sosa on missing the change of federation to the DFB: “First choice was Croatia”

VfB professional confirms Atalanta’s offer

Borna Sosa from VfB Stuttgart does not mourn the missed change of federation to the German Football Association. “My first choice was Croatia. Luckily, things have moved in that direction. The best thing for me was playing for Croatia,” said the left-back, who is a regular at the runners-up World Cup in Qatar, the French sports newspaper “L’Equipe“.

Sosa, whose mother was born in Germany, took on German citizenship in spring 2021. As a result, he was also the focus of the DFB. However, a change of association failed due to the statutes of FIFA because at the age of 22 he had played an international match for the Croatian U21. “I wasn’t called up for the Croatian team and since I was playing in Stuttgart, the club brought me closer to the German FA. My goal was and is to develop myself as a player,” explained the 24-year-old, who later apologized for wanting to change.

Back home, Sosa, who is the sixth most valuable player in Croatia’s World Cup squad with a market value of €20m, has been branded a traitor for his actions on social media. “It’s never easy, but I knew the truth. 90 percent of what was written in the media was wrong. Many people look for polemics. I’ve had difficult times, but everything is fine now. People see that I give everything for my country,” said the defender.

Sosa confirms Atalanta Bergamo offer: ‘Don’t be in a hurry to move’

Sosa also confirmed he had an offer from Serie A last summer. “There were many interests, but you also know that there is a lot of talk. In the end I had an offer from Atalanta, but I decided to stay in Stuttgart. I’ve been here for five years now and I’m in no hurry to switch. Of course, every player wants to develop and advance their career. I’m sure that this will also be the case for me after the World Cup,” said Sosa, whose contract with VfB runs until 2025.

Recently there was speculation as to whether the Swabians would have to sell the left-back this winter for financial reasons, whereupon the Stuttgart fans in the TM community sometimes clearly criticized the club’s management.
