Last year, former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson raked in a staggering £5.5million, mainly from huge fees for speaking at events abroad after he left his post as Prime Minister. According to the British newspaper ‘Sky News’, Johnson earns almost 24,500 euros an hour from lucrative appearances outside politics. The newspaper investigated how much the members of the British parliament earn with ‘side jobs’.
More than a month ago, Boris Johnson stepped out of British politics after retiring as prime minister, but that did not take a big bite out of the former prime minister’s budget. He did have to give up his salary of more than 100,000 euros per year, but he also earned about 4.9 million euros last year as a speaker at events outside politics.
For example, with a series of speeches in the United States, India and Singapore, Johnson has earned between 233,000 euros and 321,000 euros, writes ‘The Independent’. But he was also able to enjoy some very generous donations. For example, he received a sum of about 1.17 million euros from Christopher Harborne, a Thailand-based Brexiteer.
In addition, Johnson would have been paid “a very large six-figure sum” to write his new weekly column for The Daily Mail. He also earned almost 600,000 euros in January from his forthcoming memoirs ‘Like no other’.
Liz Truss also raises large sums of money with her work outside politics. Johnson’s successor, who retired as prime minister after six weeks, earns the highest amount per hour of all current MPs with her ‘side jobs’. She earns more than 17,500 euros per hour, according to ‘Sky News’. Like Johnson, Truss receives huge sums for her speeches abroad on global affairs. For example, she received more than 93,000 euros for a recent performance in Taiwan about the threat from China.
