After less than four months, German tennis icon Boris Becker and Danish youngster Holger Rune have ended their collaboration. The six-time Grand Slam winner will no longer act as the whiz kid’s coach in the future.
“I would like to inform you that I will be stepping down as Holger Rune’s head coach with immediate effect,” Boris Becker informed his followers on social media on Tuesday.
“We started this partnership with the original goal of reaching the ATP Finals at the end of last year, but as it progressed I realized that for this to be successful, I would have to be available to Holger much more than I can . Due to professional and private commitments, I can’t give Holger what he needs now,” Becker explains the reasons for the end of the collaboration and closes his message with the words: “I wish him nothing but the very best and will always be his biggest fan . I really enjoyed this journey together.”
Rune is without a doubt one of the most talented players on the ATP Tour. The right-hander is currently ranked seventh in the world, just one place behind Germany’s number one Alexander Zverev.
Becker once celebrated success as Djokovic’s coach
However, things recently took a hit when Rune failed in the second round of the Australian Open. Back then, Becker didn’t travel to Melbourne because his work as a TV expert took up a lot of time.
As coach of Grand Slam record champion Novak Djokovic (36), Becker celebrated numerous successes between 2013 and 2016 and led the Serb back to the top of the ATP rankings.
It is not yet known who will be at Rune’s side in the future. The winner of the 2022 Paris Masters has already won four titles in his career and climbed to fourth place in the world rankings in the summer of 2023.
