Boris Becker: “I survived that too”

Tennis icon Boris Becker now lives in Italy around five months after being released from prison.

“I moved to my wife’s home country,” he said on Wednesday evening during a lecture at the OMR digital festival in Hamburg. The “Bild” had previously reported that Becker lived with his partner Lilian in Milan.

Already in a major TV appearance on “Sat.1” a few days after his release, he had hinted at a future abroad. In Hamburg, Becker spoke again about his seven-month imprisonment. “Prison was my worst defeat, which I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy, but I survived that too,” he said.

In the meantime, he is “strongly looking ahead”, according to the three-time Wimbledon winner. He also criticized the way the media dealt with his person. “It’s a phenomenon that third parties always talk about me, but I don’t get a chance to speak for myself,” said Becker.

In April 2022, Becker was sentenced to two and a half years in prison for several offenses in his bankruptcy proceedings. Since then he has been in prison in an adopted home country of Great Britain. In December, he benefited from a trial designed to ease the pressure on overcrowded British prisons and was released much earlier as a result.
