The three-time Wimbledon winner comments on the currently best German tennis player – and makes an unexpected statement.
Boris Becker can imagine working as a trainer for Olympic champion Alexander Zverev. “In principle, there is definitely a possibility,” said the tennis icon on Sky on Thursday, but only “if the timing is right.” Because he has “other obligations, I’m a father, I can’t travel every week.”
At the beginning of February, Becker ended his collaboration with the young Danish star Holger Rune after less than four months. The 56-year-old wrote at the time on
“A lot of things are in flux right now”
Apparently Becker is now still interested in a similar task. “I have known Sascha since he was six years old,” said Becker about Zverev. “We like each other, we are mates, I know his strengths, no weaknesses.”
But that “has to happen now. A lot of things are in flux right now. I like the way he’s playing tennis now, after his long injury.” Zverev is currently being trained by his father Alexander, and his older brother Mischa has been responsible for the management of the Hamburger since 2021.
Becker had his most successful time as a coach from December 2013 to December 2016 as Novak Djoković’s coach. In their three years together, Djoković won six Grand Slam titles (Australian Open 2015 and 2016, French Open 2016, Wimbledon 2014 and 2015, US Open 2015) and 14 Masters 1,000 titles. Since then, Becker has not trained another tennis player, although he is often talked about.
