The municipality also wants to focus on housing construction. The time when Borger-Odoorn was known as a shrinking municipality is over, says councilor Henk Zwiep. “The population is growing, so we need more houses.” The municipality is in discussions with Woonservice about the addition of rental properties. The arrival of tiny houses and flexible housing is also being considered. In the latter case, Zwiep thinks of Nieuw-Buinen, Borger and Valthermond.
The municipality also wants to provide space for housing construction. At Borger-West, the area known as the Strijkijzer (between the N374 and the Koesteeg) there is room for a large number of homes, according to Zwiep. Behind the MFA in Nieuw-Buinen there is room for 77 rental and owner-occupied homes. At Drouwenermond, opposite restaurant De Gulle Boergondiër, a second ribbon has been devised with 20 plots, of which the municipality initially wants to put twelve on the market. Finally, a large-scale neighborhood renovation is taking place in 2e Exloërmond in Anne de Vriesstraat, Jan Fabriciusstraat and Middenlaan. Seventy outdated homes will be demolished and replaced with new construction.
