Books: Three nonfiction titles and the best sellers of the week

“Gallery of Argentine celebrities” by Pola Oloixarac. Zorzal books, 190 pgs., $5,250.

Although many of those who follow Pola Oloixarac in the main newspapers of the country, do not understand his metaphors and references, the fierce irony of his texts leaves no one indifferent. It is that in addition to an inclement observer of politics, Oloixarac is a very good writer, author of three notable novels: “The wild theories”, “The dark constellations” and “Mona”.

In this volume edited by Thrush Books (with unpublished articles and others already published) the stable cast of the “caste” is described with hilarious ingenuity, by an impartial judge, who does not make concessions. She may or may not agree with her look, but there’s no denying her talent. Massa, Cristina, Milei, Grabois, Donda and many more, make up the amazing gallery of a country read as a parody.

“V13. Judicial Chronicle” by Emmanuel Carrère. Anagram, 272 pgs., $5,750.

It is called “V13”, when Friday, November 13, 2015the day that at three points in Paris an attempt was made against the lives of hundreds of French people, who were enjoying the start of the weekend. “Bataclan” It is, surely, the name that sounds familiar to all of us; that of the concert hall that was the main center of the terrorist action. Emmanuel Carrére covered for “L’Obs” the long trial that sought the conviction of the murderers (only one of the perpetrators is alive, the rest of the defendants did lesser tasks) and reparation to the victims, who had the opportunity to tell their story in front of the court. The book is a record of that trial (which lasted 9 months), in short texts, which go through the testimonies of those involved and the main situations that occurred during the process. Carrère finds once again, as in all the true stories that he transformed into beautiful literary pieces, the way to convey the dramas and paradoxes of an unfortunate event. Bypassing wallowing in pain, he intelligently installs us at the crossroads of reflection.

“Personality and Power” by Ian Kershaw. Criticism, 574 pgs., $9,700.

ian kershaw is a British historian known throughout the world for his book, “Hitler. The definitive biography. Although he can be defined as a specialist in modern German history, in the volume just published by the Criticism label, Kershaw reviews the context of action and the personality of some of the most relevant figures of the 20th and 21st centuries: Lenin, Mussolini, Stalin, Churchill and closer in time, Margaret Thatcher and Michail Gorbachev. The fundamental question of the essay is how certain political figures promote historical change (in many cases, negatively) and to what extent their personality influences the exceptional role they must have played in their time. As always, Kershaw’s academic rigor is matched by a highly agile read.
