Book: Lionesses complaining about Pasi Mustose

The behavior of Pasi Mustonen, who left the position of head coach of the Finnish Lions, speaks volumes.

Ice Hockey goalkeeper Nora Räty and 15 other players of the Women’s Lions have filed complaints against the former head coach Pasi Mustonen behavior. The complaints were sent anonymously to the Ice Hockey Federation last January, on the same day the team flew to the Beijing Olympics. Räty reveals the matter Marika Lehton in the book he is writing Noora Räty – The Lion Queen (WSOY)

Mustonen coached the women’s national ice hockey team from 2014. Her contract expired after the last Olympics, when the Lionesses took bronze. However, Mustonen had to go back home in the middle of the tournament because of a problem in the neighborhood.

Mustonen’s player selections caused consternation before the Olympics, when Räty, who was considered the best goalkeeper, was left at home. The same thing happened in the previous World Cups as well. In the new book published by Räty, the goalkeeper tells several examples of the inflamed relationship between the two.

– The situation looked bad, especially because a few of my national team mates told me that Pas had called them. Pasi had asked the other players if I should be selected for the team and then explained to the players why he thought not. He had argued, among other things, that I wouldn’t be a good teammate, Räty describes the events of December last year in his book.

For Rädy, the Beijing Olympics would have been the fifth in his career. He was offered the special-sounding role of a stay-at-home first-choice goalkeeper. So he would have been in Finland waiting for his opportunity, if Anni Keisala would have been injured. Räty did not agree to this agreement.

Mustonen’s work as head coach ended at the Beijing tournament, but Räty has still left the national team Juuso Toivolan to take responsibility.

– My long, successful and historic career in the Finnish women’s national hockey team was over. It ended ugly, Räty states in the book.

According to information from Ilta-Sanom The Finnish Ice Hockey Federation has sent the complaints of the Naisleijoni players to be investigated by the Finnish Center for Sports Ethics.
