U2 singer Bono paid a visit to his old school on Tuesday. He gave a lecture to around 140 students in the library of the Mount Temple Comprehensive School in Dublin’s Clontarf district. He also read from his memoirs, which were published on November 1st under the title “Surrender. 40 Songs, One Story”.

“He was very nice and seemed pretty down to earth,” a student told the newspaper “Irish Independent”. “He didn’t have a big entourage with him or anything, just a few people who seemed to work with him. He talked for a while, and then he read from his new memoirs.”

According to the student, a rumor went around the school that morning that Bono was coming, but the visit was not officially announced. Bono also visited the music room after the lecture and spoke to some of the students and teachers. The visit was filmed by a professional film crew, so the appearance may be part of a documentary, perhaps Bono’s memoir.

Not only Bono attended the school, which roughly corresponds to a German comprehensive school. The rest of the band members were Mount Temple students, and even the band got its start here: In 1976, Bono, then 16 years old, responded to a notice on the bulletin board. “Drummer is looking for a musician for the band”, was the spartanly formulated advertisement of the then 14-year-old later U2 drummer Larry Mullen Jr.
